about

Witches Reel
Trad.
This is the most overtly pagan of the songs on this album. In the trial of Earl Bothwell Francis Stuart for witchcraft in 1691, a Scottish coven was accused of performing this reel, led by the Earl, on a cliff side by the sea. Their alleged intent was to cause a fierce storm to rise up, threatening the ship of King James IV of Scotland. Modern versions of the reel have been recorded by Green Crown (With Which to Feed the Fairies, 2002) and by Katie Rose (Weird lore: Notes from the Folk Underground, 2012). Our arrangement is a fusion of influences from both those recordings. I confess that during the recording, I might have pronounced the archaic word queyne incorrectly, as “coin” instead of “queen”. Ah, well! (A “queyne” is a woman or a girl, by the way, as is a “cummer”, while a “carlin” is an old woman or witch.)
