about

Willows Song
Giovanni
The second-most overtly pagan of the offerings on this album! Fans of the film The Wicker Man will instantly recognise this as the enchantment used by Britt Ekland’s character to test Sgt Howie’s resolve by means of seduction. The lyrics “Fair maid, white and red/ comb you smooth and stroke your head” appears to allude to a folk tale called The Three Heads in The Well, in which a young maiden is sent to fetch water and finds in the well three golden-haired heads that each ask:
“Wash me, and comb me,
And lay me down softly.
And lay me on a bank to dry,
That I may look pretty,
When somebody passes by.”
When she has done as the heads ask, each grants her a magical gift.
