This mournful song is taken from the second half of Donovan’s 1967 double album, A Gift from a Flower to a Garden. A sailor’s wife paces the beach, appealing to the elements to grant her husband safe return from his last voyage. The poignancy of the tale lies in the fact that she does not know what the title tells us: she is already a widow. Born Donovan Philips Leitch, Donovan is well known for his associations with alternative spirituality.
